Two Republican lawmakers from Florida introduced legislation in Congress today they hope will save the life of Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman whose parents are battling a court order to remove her life-sustaining feeding tube.

Current law leaves the rights of disabled persons at the mercy of courts instead of the Constitution, the lawmakers argue.

That's good rhetoric, but pretty silly as a matter of substance. Habeas Corpus (what the bill provides) does two things: allows for a rehearing on already-decided matters, and effects a change of venue.

jpe,
You are right, that is very good rhetoric. The definition of rhetoric is as follows:
"The art or study of using language effectively and persuasively.
A treatise or book discussing this art.
Skill in using language effectively and persuasively." :-)

You are going to have to explain to me why this is silly, I don't understand. Do you believe a handicapped person should not be able to have an appeal when a single judge gives them a death sentence?

BTW, I left a comment on your blog that I don't think you ever answered. Why do you think that a disabled person like Terri should not have the same right as any other American to not be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law and a trial by a jury of ones peers?
